From a small town replete with history, Dapitan took a giant step forward and became a chartered city by virtue of Republic Act No. 3811 which was signed by then President Diosdado Macapagal on 22 June 1963, thus becoming the first city in the Province of Zamboanga del Norte.

Tourism. The City is endowed with numerous accessible beautiful scenic white sand beaches located along its long coast line and the two island barangays Silinog and Aliguay. The most developed of these beaches is the Dakak Beach, located in barangay Taguilon where the famous Dakak Park and Beach Resort can be found.
BARANGAYS. There are 50 barangays of which eight (8) barangays are considered urban located at the poblacion, twenty seven (27) are interior, thirteen (13) are coastal and the remaining two (2), Aliguay and Selinog are island barangays. URBAN BARANGAYS.
Rizal Shrine. This is the major historical landmark of Dapitan City. It refers to the more or less sixteen (16) hectares estate of Dr. Jose P. Rizal which he purchased in Barangay Talisay and is approximately two (2) kilometers NW from the City Hall.
Dapitan City is rich in historical treasure, Dr. Jose Rizal, our national hero spent four years in exile in this city which established the city’s identity as a unique and historical place in the Philippines.
