Babesiosis is caused by apicomplexan parasites of the genus, Babesia. While more than 100 species have been reported, only a few have been identified as causing human infections, including B. microti , B. divergens , B. duncani , and a currently un-named strain designated MO-1.
Infections can be asymptomatic or cause a malaria-like illness with fever and hemolytic anemia. Disease is most severe in asplenic patients, older patients, and patients with AIDS. Diagnosis is by identification of Babesia in a peripheral blood smear, serologic test, or polymerase chain reaction (PCR).
