Timothy Pickering was born on June 17, 1745, in Salem, Massachusetts, and graduated from Harvard University. He used a law education to begin a career in public service, becoming a selectman and assessor for Essex County, Massachusetts, in 1772.
Pickering went on to succeed Nathanael Greene as Quartermaster General of the army in 1780. As Quartermaster General, Pickering was greatly concerned with the welfare of the common soldier. He was always angry with those he believed did not do their best to help the soldiers.
