The Neon Demon is an excellent satirical thriller that does have the substance to match its style. It's a movie about shallow, soulless people, so the movie was never meant to be emotional or connect you deeply with the characters. But it does have depth, even if it's negative depth.

Neon Demon is pretty meh as far as horror or entertainment. It is however visually fantastic. From a raw technical standpoint it's pretty great.
I totally respect this new wave of directors who really sort of specialize and rely the visual presentation of their work, but Neon Demon just seemed so vague and abstract. It started off well. Honestly I thought The Witch was quite good across the board, beyond being easy on the eyes it was a smart allegory of puberty, womanhood, internalized misogyny, joining the fold, blah blah blah. I wouldn’t lump it in with Neon Demon and Mandy, personally!
To me, The Neon Demon sort of becomes similar to what it's criticizing. It's a vapid exercise in aesthetics to the exclusion of all else, which is ironic, considering the subject matter. It looks and carries itself like an arthouse film, but the plot feels kind of like a sleazy exploitation flick.
Mar 25, 2022 · That article claims "THE NEON DEMON'S CHIEF ARGUMENT IS THAT A 16-YEAR-OLD GIRL BELIEVING SHE’S BEAUTIFUL IS A CRIME OF HUBRIS THAT DESERVES PUNISHMENT BY DEATH". Which makes me think the writer didn't really understand the film at all. Fanning's character didn't do anything wrong at all.
