The politician and planter Thomas Lee purchased the land for Stratford in 1717; although no records exist to indicate when the house was built, construction likely began in 1738 and was completed sometime in the 1740s.
Stratford Hall is my favorite day-trip destination on Virginia's Northern Neck. It's known as Robert E. Lee's birthplace, but it is far more than just another shrine to Lee. The credit for this architectural beauty goes to R. E. Lee's ancestors--the prominent Lee family.
