Basilar skull fracture at 315 km/h is about as instant as it gets. Edit: POTENTIALLY NSFL. It took about 3:50min from the moment he crashed to the moment they started CPR on him. He was dead on impact.

Max Mosley's response was touching. While everyone went to Senna's funeral, he went to Ratzenberger's. Let's at least take this day, to appreciate the life and times of Roland Ratzenberger. He really raced a variety of cars, Formula Nippon, Group C, touring cars, before finally making it to Formula One.
May 1, 2024 · Overshadowed perhaps, but Ratzenberger was a rookie in his third race, Aryton Senna was a three-time world champion in his 11th year of superstardom. Any death is a tragedy, but I'm fairly certain if Lewis Hamilton or Max Verstappen died on the same race weekend as someone like Logan Sargeant or Olly Bearman, Lewis/Max would be the bigger story and be remembered as the more significant event.
The helmet was returned to Roland's family by the Italian authorities, along with other possessions, at the end of 1994, and is one of the few mementoes his parents have of his racing career. Apparently the left side, away from the camera, is damaged.
Mar 4, 2014 · What killed Ratzenberger (and Senna) would be incredibly rare in modern Formula 1. They both died due to basilar skull fractures and these are practically eliminated when using a HANS Device as the force that would usually cause the fracture is transferred to the chest and spread out to reduce injury.
Jul 4, 2018 · It was the prestigious Race of the Century between Roland Ratzenberger's Formula Ford 1600 machine and Roland Rat's bright pink, modified 1953 Ford Anglia, nicknamed the 'Ratmobile'. The two-car showdown held at Silverstone certainly lived up to everybody's expectations as Ratzenberger and Roland Rat had a thoroughly entertaining race.

Jul 24, 2015 · Was watching Sky F1's "Remembering Roland" (terrific programme, btw) and there was this snippet from an interview with Humphrey Corbett who was Simtek's engineer at the time. They were talking about how Simtek was sponsored by MTV so MTV were given some broadcasting rights and followed Simtek to all the grand prix, getting interviews and the like, and they sent some woman to do the job.

The cars had been getting more and more dangerous year on year chasing speed, and that weekend was the red line in the sand. Roland's death was avoidable, and not just due to the cars just being unsafe.
