Pinctada maxima is a species of pearl oyster, a marine bivalve mollusk in the family Pteriidae, the pearl oysters. There are two different color varieties: the Gold-lipped oyster and the Silver-lipped oyster.
Pinctada maxima is found on reefs between nearly all the islands of Indonesia. Pearls and MOP from the Malaysian Archipelago have been known in Europe since the times of the Portuguese seafarers.
However the name Pinctada maxima (Jameson, 1901) is in usage and, even if the provisions of ICZN art. 23.9 do not apply to declare it “nomen oblitum”, the case should be brought to the ICZN. Meanwhile, the name in prevailing usage is here maintained as “accepted” for this commercially important species.

Oct 31, 2014 · The internal structures of 774 natural marine pearls collected in situ by two of the authors from freshly opened wild Pinctada maxima mollusks were studied in detail to gain a better understanding of the internal structural characteristics of natural P. maxima pearls.
Pinctada maxima are seeded at about 2 years of age and take 2 years to fully develop a pearl. They can be reseeded up to 3 or 4 times. Akoya pearls are harvested after about 9 to 16 months.
