Orvon Grover Autry[2] (September 29, 1907 – October 2, 1998), [3] nicknamed the Singing Cowboy, was an American actor, musician, singer, composer, rodeo performer, and baseball team owner, who largely gained fame by singing in a crooning style on radio, in films, and on television for more than three decades, beginning in the early 1930s.

Composer, songwriter ("Back in the Saddle Again","That Silver Haired Daddy of Mine"), actor, author and businessman, educated at Ravia (Oklahoma) High School. He was a telegrapher for the Frisco Railroad, and first appeared on radio in Tulsa, Oklahoma. Later he had his own radio show on CBS.
Gene Autry. Actor: The Gene Autry Show. After high school Gene Autry worked as a laborer for the St. Louis and San Francisco Railroad in Oklahoma. Next he was a telegrapher. In 1928 he began singing on a local radio station, and three years later he had his own show and was making his first recordings.
Entertainer Gene Autry joined the Army Air Corps in 1942 and became Sgt. Gene Autry. During the war, he ferried fuel, ammunition, and arms in the China-India-Burma theater of war and flew over the Himalayas, the hazardous air route known as "The Hump."
Charismatic and handsome astride his horse, Champion, Autry sprinkled his movies with music, humor (Smiley Burnette was his regular comic sidekick), and a minimum of gunplay. In 1940, Autry was voted the fourth most popular Hollywood star, out-polling even Tyrone Power and James Cagney.
