Jay R recalled starting out in the music scene in 2003 with the release of his debut album, Gameface, and being told to abandon singing with heavy R&B inflections (or kulot) for the more popular birit (belting) way of performing. But he stuck to his guns and persisted on doing his brand of music.

That recording was certified platinum and contained the hit single “Bakit Pa Ba,” written by Vehnee Saturno. “I was signed up pretty quickly, but was told that R&B was not popular in the Philippines,” he recounted.
