Surigao del Norte is located at the Northeastern part of Mindanao between 125 o 15’ to 126 o 15’ east longitude and 9 o 18’ to 10 o 30’ north latitude. It is bounded on the North and East by the Pacific Ocean, on the South by the Provinces of Agusan del Norte and Surigao del Sur and on the West by the Surigao Strait.
This is the time when surfing aficionados coming from around the world converge at General Luna, Siargao Island, Surigao del Norte, to try their luck against the strong waves coming from the Pacific Sea.
History. The explorer Ruy López de Villalobos headed an expedition to Surigao in 1543, an attempt at subjugation which failed because of the resistance of the natives. At that time the island of Mindanao was given the name Caesarea Caroli, in honor of Carlos V of Spain.

Tagana-an is a coastal – estuarine town located at the eastern portion in the mainland of the Province of Surigao del Norte. It shares common boundaries with Surigao City, Sison and Placer in the mainland, Bucas Grande and Siargao islands off the seawaters of Hinatuan Passage.
The Municipality of Socorro, which comprises the whole island of Bucas Grande, province of Surigao del Norte, Caraga Region is situated at latitude 9º 33’ 49” – 9º 47’ 00” and longitude 125º 58’ – 126º 04’ 30”. It is 60 kms southeast of Surigao City.

This town is situated on the northern part of Siargao Island, approximately 60 nautical miles from Surigao City. The municipality was known as Sapao, a name given by Spanish colonizers who accidentally were stranded ashore and met a native fishermen catching fish with his fish net.
