The City of Suffolk is organized under a Council/Manager form of government. Eight elected officials sit on City Council. A City Manager oversees the daily operations of the city. Suffolk has also adopted a comprehensive plan (PDF) and zoning ordinances.

Demographics. There's a bright future in store for Suffolk. When the City of Suffolk merged with the County of Nansemond on January 1, 1974, it grew overnight from a small, country town of two square miles to the state's largest city of 430 square miles, half the size of Rhode Island.
Chief James (Danny) Buie was hired by the Suffolk Police Department in September of 1996. Following his graduation from the Chesapeake Police Academy, he served in the Uniform Patrol Division where he served as a Field Training Officer.
