Oct 10, 2012 · I always thought that it was a word-play with "Moeru" 「燃える」 (To burn). If you say 「燃える」 it means to burn with passion, pride, etc. (In context obviously). In the same token, saying 「萌える」 appears to be similar to relaxing or feeling good, i.e. the emotion you feel when you see cute girls.
Personally, I agree that people nowadays overuse the term to refer to any cute girl, especially critics as an "I don't like moe shit" style insult. When every series that has a cute girl in it is "moe shit" then, to quote the title, "What the fuck is moe?" That's what he's on about: moe is something more than just cute girls.
