I also bought a black 2008 lancer gts 5 months ago. Since then i have been fighting with mitsubishi and the dealer because of the same paint problem. The paint is gone in front of the rear wheels and also its now starting back the whole side of the car. I dont recommend anyone buy a new lancer unless you care to have it paint twice a year.

As I can see the biggest problem with ES model is its slow and loud accelaration due to the CVT transmission it is using.
On other markets (e.g. New Zealand), Mitsu specifically mentions the CVT word when describing the tranny - "INVECS-III Sport Mode 6-speed CVT" .... According with a Mitsu press release, the 2008 Lancer is the FIRST Mitsubishi car with CVT in NA. Whomever says the NA 2007 Outlander has a CVT tranny is misinformed.
On my 2008 Mitsubishi Lancer GTS we just went at about the 3,400 mile mark to get our first L-O-F. We bought a prepaid 3 year maintenance program and the provider issues coupons for the work each step of the way, you don't forget maintenance that way, etc.

The Outlander sold in Europe and Asia all come with a rear fog light mechanism that can be activated by using the rear fog switch/knob attached to the steering wheel.
