The Luzon Strait lies between Taiwan and Luzon, which is part of the Philippines. The island of Taiwan used to be called "Formosa". This is the name used on the old map shown. The Luzon Strait is an important waterway. It is at least 250 kilometres (160 mi) wide.
It is bordered on the west by the South China Sea (Luzon Sea in Philippine territorial waters), on the east by the Philippine Sea, and on the north by the Luzon Strait containing the Babuyan Channel and Balintang Channel.
