It really depends on the onsen location. One option is to hire a private onsen - or have one in your room. There seems to be one hireable private onsen at one of the public onsens in Ginzan.

Does the bus from Yamagata to Ginzan Onsen runs frequently till late at night or is it better for us to stay at a ryokan in Ginzan Onsen rather than missing the bus back to Yamagata . Is September a low season for Ginzan Onsen.
