Al never even attempts the state alchemist qualifying exam in the manga, and the train and Shou Tucker incidents happen after Ed becomes a state alchemist.

Awhile ago I was re-watching some of the Fullmetal Alchemist: Brotherhood episodes in French (specifically 54) to reference something else, I noticed that in 54, Mustang uses the "tu" form (the informal "you") when talking to Hawkeye after being persuaded against finishing off Envy, which seems a bit odd.
The former is suggested in several episodes, yet the possibility to create gold is suggested in the law that state alchemists can not create gold. So the correct answer. Shrug Full metal alchemist doesn't let real science get in the way if it's fun. Which is a good thing.

As people before me have already stated; Al's gate is from The Marrow of Alchemy.If I remember correctly, the symbol represents purification, and it is believed that the only way to obtain total purification is to get rid oneself of their physical body (something Al is pretty familiar with).
