Jun 15, 2020 · The Polaroid Corporation was founded by American scientist Edwin H. Land in 1937, but it wasn’t known as a leader of instant photography then (as it is today). Polaroid used polarizer technology (an optical filter) to create all sorts of zany products, including 3-D movies and glare-reducing goggles for dogs.
Beginnings in Polarization Research. In 1926 Edwin Land's desire to create useful products based on scientific invention prompted him to pursue independent research on polarization rather than to return to Harvard after his freshman year. After creating a prototype synthetic polarizer in New York, Land returned to Harvard in 1929.
Edwin H. Land (1909–1991) was the innovative inventor responsible for conceiving of and perfecting instant photography. Known simply as Polaroid, the system revolutionized traditional photography by compressing darkroom processes into an integrated film unit and producing a final photograph in the seconds following the click of a camera shutter.
The first Polaroid camera, the Model 95, used a special roll of film made by Kodak. It produced black and white proofs, which took exactly one minute to develop. Land’s process was later improved several times. Colour appeared in 1963.
