Courtship, for a Christian, is a relationship between a man and a woman in which they seek to determine if it is God’s will for them to marry each other. Under the protection, guidance, and blessing of parents or mentors, the couple concentrates on developing a deeper friendship that could lead to marriage, as they discern both their readiness and God’s timing for such a marriage.
As they seek the Lord’s will together, they will discern God’s direction for the courtship. (See Proverbs 3:5–7.) It is important for both the man and woman to understand that a decision to enter into a courtship is not a commitment to marry. The goal of courtship is to determine whether or not the Lord is leading the couple to marry.
Every courtship is unique because each couple and their circumstances are unique. More significantly, God’s ways are unique, and He has creative, timely, and even miraculous ways of bringing a man and woman together for marriage. In every courtship, both individuals and families should diligently seek God’s direction.
