All the signs were going in the direction of Rob Roy: it had a more established cast, there was greater faith in the script, the director wasn't a sophomore like Gibson, it was really inexpensive and was shot quicker and release sooner.

Huge liberties were taken with the battle of Stirling bridge but crucially it works as a piece of cinema, whereas an ambush in a bog by a river would have been more expensive and difficult to shoot.

Aug 17, 2021 · And really, its just more cinematic: Braveheart has stretches of ten-fifteen minutes at a time where nary a word is spoken, whereas Gladiator function a little bit closer to a play in terms of telling its story via the characters talking about it. Braveheart. Gladiator every time and twice on Sunday.

Both are almost three hours long. In both, he fights the English. Both are historical yet historically inaccurate but still great movies.

  10. IMO it's Gladiator > The Northman > Braveheart. Gladiator has the perfect mix of action, emotion, and plot. The Northman was pretty good, but mostly just a straightforward revenge plot. I felt far less connection to the main character than I did with Maximus. And I expected more abstract craziness from Robert Eggers.
