Abdulmari Asia Imao (14 January 1936 – 16 December 2014) was a Filipino painter and sculptor. Imao was named National Artist of the Philippines for Visual Arts in 2006. A Tausūg, Imao is the first Moro to receive the recognition. [1]

Abdulmari was a sculptor and painter who fused traditional Islamic designs with Modernist strokes that result in vivid works of bold geometrical patterns. He obtained his Bachelor of Fine Arts in Sculpture from the University of the Philippines (UP) in Diliman, Quezon City.

Feb 28, 2024 · On June 9, 2006, the National Commission for Culture and the Arts (NCCA), conferred upon Dr. Imao the title of National Artist for Visual Arts. He was the first Bangsamoro artist to receive this prestigious recognition since 1972. Dr. Imao’s works mainstreamed and introduced Moro arts and culture throughout the entire country.
