A Little Princess is a children's novel by Frances Hodgson Burnett, first published as a book in 1905. It is an expanded version of the short story "Sara Crewe: or, What Happened at Miss Minchin's", which was serialized in St. Nicholas Magazine from December 1887, and published in book form in 1888.
Sara Crewe, an exceptionally intelligent and imaginative student at Miss Minchin's Select Seminary for Young Ladies, is devastated when her adored, indulgent father dies. Now penniless and banished to a room in the attic, Sara is demeaned, abused, and forced to work as a servant.
A Little Princess is one of those great stories that can transport the reader on a sentimental journey but is not as widely read and appreciated as it should be. The story follows Sara Crewe, who's enjoyment of the student life at a London private school is interrupted when her father dies and she is cast into poverty.
