Opened in 1927, it is named in honor of the American Legion, a U.S. organization of military veterans .

There are several pay-to-park lots around the stadium. The one I parked in was grass and gravel and, being a rainy day when I visited, the lot was a muddy mess.

A horseshoe shape with open north end and arcades decorating its exterior never came into full existence, though.
