Sports are quite prominent at Bates, but not in excess. Plenty of attention is given to the arts. The Thorncrag Bird Sanctuary is 372 acres and is literally across the street from Bates.

Mar 21, 2018 · Bates’ campus is beautiful. There is a bird sanctuary adjacent, and kids run and hike there. Of the three schools, it is generally acknowledged that Bates has the friendliest atmosphere. Traditionally, of the three, Bates has the more creative and arty vibe, but at least 40% of Bates kids are athletes and there are a lot of outdoor activities.
Apr 25, 2013 · There’s one caveat…. Smith Hall is an all-freshman dorm which is generally regarded as the worst of the first-year living options. It’s arranged in quads (so you have three roommates), and is often seen as kind of a “party” dorm. I will say so that MOST people still love Smith and remember it with great affection.

Jun 8, 2006 · Bates is ranked at #21. Which, obviously, is an awesome rating when you are looking at how ever many liberal arts colleges there are in the US. But I say “so low” because within Bates’ peers (the NESCACs mostly) the rating seems low for such an outstanding school. I think the biggest surprise is that Colby ranks just above it (at #20).
