Or simply it is when the stairs are a lot larger in width, than the minimally required width. The following 3 pictures represent some cases.

  6. Oct 20, 2009 · The requirements for handrail spacing on monumental stairs should apply to the "natural" paths of egress travel. At those points, you need to have handrails on both sides of a specific path, but not elsewhere. For an example, consider a museum with 100 or 200 ft. of stair width.

  9. Nov 17, 2009 · Re: monumental stair handrails There are a lot of "monumental" stairs that ARE a part of the means of egress (i.e. capital steps, mezzanine stairs, unenclosed exits, etc.). In that case, the code requires that there be a handrail provided on both sides and along the natural path of travel (2006 IBC; 1012.8, last sentence).

  11. Nov 25, 2009 · DSA does define "Walk", describing it as an exterior condition, so it doesn't seem to address a single interior riser: HCD-1-AC, which covers private housing, seems to give it a little more leeway to not necessarily be exterior.
