The point is that the DISTINCT operator will collate several records with the same Category value, each with potentially different createion dates. Thus it is logically impossible when using DISTINCT. This pushes the required logic to a GROUP BY instead of DISTINCT, allowing an aggregate (MAX) on the creation date. –

Aug 10, 2014 · Yes groupBy is actually fetching the distinct values, in fact the groupBy will categorize the same values, so that we can use aggregate functions on them. but in this scenario we have no aggregate functions, we are just selecting the value which will cause the result to have distinct values.

Oct 9, 2019 · By marking ID_A as PK essentially you are telling EF that this field is unique, hence it will assume any combination of fields including that field as unique, and will remove the normal GroupBy / Distinct operator. You really need to define a real unique key as PK for that entity.
