Through the spring and summer of 2011, the Dutch photographer Erwin Olaf (b. 1959) worked on a monumental history piece and a series of related figure pieces, portraits and still lifes about a key event in Dutch history, the relief of Leiden on 3 October 1574.
He was first recognised internationally in 1988 after winning the Young European Photographer of the Year Award for his series ‘Chessmen’. Olaf started his career by documenting 1980’s nightlife, but soon explored his own series and subjects in both black-and-white and colour.
Gemeentemuseum Den Haag and The Hague Museum of Photography are to honour one of the Netherlands’ most famous photographers, Erwin Olaf (b. 1959), with a double exhibition. Olaf, whose recent portraits of the royal family drew widespread admiration, will turn sixty this year – a good moment to stage a major retrospective.
