Mesa County is situated on 3,341 square miles of the eastern Colorado Plateau in western Colorado. The county is named for the wide, flat-topped mountains within its borders. The Spanish called such mountains mesas—meaning “tables.”
Mesa County is the fourth-largest county by area in Colorado, recording a 2010 population of 146,723. The county is aptly named for the plentiful, massive mesas in the area, including Grand Mesa National Forest.
Grand Junction is the largest city in Mesa County and is the county seat. Almost directly between Salt Lake City, Utah and Denver, Colorado, Grand Junction calls home to 66,000 residents. The city gained it's name from the confluence of the Colorado and Gunnison rivers.
