Apr 19, 2016 · I've found a great API for reading Openstreetmap data; Mapscript. This is an interface to MapServer, which is able to read *.map and *.shp files. It is able to use a spatial index and is therefore potentially extremely fast.
Jun 20, 2022 · You can query OpenStreetMap data based on specific criteria with the help of the Overpass API. It is designed for reading data, and you may build queries with Overpass QL (or Overpass XML as an alternative).

The API page provides a link to the specification of the protocol to be used to obtain data. Its limitations are: it will only return very small areas < 0.25deg square.
It is possible to download raw data for a certain area, entire countries or regions, or certain features such as roads or buildings. There are also many ways to use use existing sets or of OpenStreetMap data, such as map images, routing software and more.
