The Paperback Library began releasing novels based on the TV series Dark Shadows in December 1966. There were thirty-three novels released through to 1972, all of them written by William Edward Daniel Ross under his pen name Marilyn Ross.
Several Dark Shadows novels have been released over the years featuring characters and situations as seen in the televised series. Most of these books form a separate continuity, particularly those released by Paperback Library.
This novel follows the framework established by the first six months or so of Dark Shadows, in which Victoria Winters leaves the foundling home in New York where she grew up to work as a governess in the remote mansion Collinwood (called "Collins House" in the novel).
