(My translation). In attempting to understand this difficult text, one normally seeks other Bible passages to provide context and precedent; none have been found.
The number 666 is presented as symbols in Revelation: chi xi stigma. “Chi” = abbreviation for Christ “Xi”= abbreviation for “xulon” which means “a tree or a beam from which any one is suspended, a gibbet, a cross” “Stigma” = to pierce. We have the symbols representing the true Christ being crucified here in Revelation 13:18.
This calls for wisdom: let the one who has understanding calculate the number of the beast, for it is the number of a man, and his number is 666. 1 —Revelation 13:18 . The Mark of the Beast: NKJV, Revelation 13:17 - and that no one may buy or sell except one who has the mark or the name of the beast, or the number of his name. Note: There is a number of the name, a name, and a mark. The "mark" appears different than "the name" or "number".

It's been a number of years since I've posted this question; and your response would fall under the category of "Historicist", although the presupposition is "The Beast has to be the Pope". There have been a number of Bad Popes, and even a few "Really Bad Popes"; many say the current pope falls in this category.
