   Van Gogh, Vincent

   • 1. (1853–90), Dutch painter; full name Vincent Willem Van Gogh. He is best known for his post-impressionist work. His most famous pictures include several studies of sunflowers and A Starry Night (1889). Affected with severe depression, he cut off part of his own ear and eventually committed suicide.
