A work of sociological commentary, the film tells a story from the future, set in a dystopian world where individuality and love are forbidden, but two citizens dare to rebel. Living in a homogenous world where conformity is the rule, THX 1138 is a normal, unquestioning citizen.
In the 25th century, humans exist in a computer-controlled subterranean world where emotions are outlawed, mind-numbing drugs are mandated and no one has a name, only an alphanumeric designation. But one man, THX 1138 (Duvall), secretly resists his drug regimen and commits the cardinal crime against the state--he experiences love.
The citizens are force-fed drugs to inhibit their passions, but THX 1138 (Robert Duvall) and his mate LUH 3417 (Maggie McOmie) cut down on their drug rations and discover that they have sexual appetites.
A technician named THX 1138 lives a mundane life between work and taking a controlled consumption of drugs that the government uses to make puppets out of people. As THX is without drugs for the first time he has feelings for a woman and they start a secret relationship.
