Koe no Katachi (聲の形The Shape of Voice) is a manga series written and illustrated by Yoshitoki Oima. The story centers around Shouko Nishimiya, a deaf middle school student who transfers to a new school and subsequently becomes the bullying target of her classmates.
Shōya Ishida (石田 将也, Ishida Shōya?) is the male protagonist and main character of the Koe no Katachi series. He was once the bully of Shōko Nishimiya during sixth grade, a fact he grows to deeply regret and struggles to come to terms with as he befriends Shōko several years later.

The main character and narrator. In elementary school, he leads his class in bullying Shoko for her deafness. When the bullying gets the attention of higher school authorities, the class turns Shoya into a scapegoat so they will not have to also take responsibility. As a result, he becomes ostracized and bullied by his former friends.
