Guts' rage toward Griffith is halted by the thought of Casca. The survivors are abruptly attacked by an onslaught of Kushan. Soon after, they are met with the arrivals of Zodd and the Skull Knight, the latter directing their attention to a concentration of light in the distance.
The reason is because Guts's rage is a massive focal point of the entire story, and dealing with the rage is the foundation of his character development. So any panels that show him going into a ahem berserker rage are really really important for the reader to understand the vibe.
I think they're using Gaiseric/Skull Knight as a mirror as to what Guts could potentially be if he keeps giving into rage. I felt they were foreshadowing a bit when the older witch-man was talking with Guts and Skull Knight, and asking Guts if he would let himself be consumed by his anger, or use it to keep himself alive.
