Jun 3, 2024 · Rosetta Stone is an ancient Egyptian stone bearing inscriptions in several languages and scripts; their decipherment led to the understanding of hieroglyphic writing. It was found in 1799 near the town of Rosetta (Rashid), about 35 miles northeast of Alexandria.
It was found there in July 1799 by French officer Pierre-François Bouchard during the Napoleonic campaign in Egypt. It was the first Ancient Egyptian bilingual text recovered in modern times, and it aroused widespread public interest with its potential to decipher this previously untranslated hieroglyphic script.

Bouchard was an officer of engineers in Napoleon 's army, and he extracted the stone from an old wall which was being demolished as part of the construction work on Fort Julien.

Soldiers in Napoleon's army discovered the Rosetta Stone in 1799 while digging the foundations of an addition to a fort near the town of el-Rashid (Rosetta). On Napoleon's defeat, the stone became the property of the British under the terms of the Treaty of Alexandria (1801) along with other antiquities that the French had found.
