He is known for his creation of private detective Sherlock Holmes, who first appeared (with his friend Dr. Watson, the narrator of the stories) in A Study in Scarlet (1887). Other notable works: The Adventures of Sherlock Holmes (1892) and The Hound of the Baskervilles (1902).
