Leslie Allan Murray AO (17 October 1938 – 29 April 2019) was an Australian poet, anthologist and critic. His career spanned over 40 years and he published nearly 30 volumes of poetry as well as two verse novels and collections of his prose writings.
Les (Leslie Allan) Murray was considered to be the leading Australian poet of his generation. He grew up in poverty on his grandparents’ farm in Bunyah, New South Wales, a district he moved back to with his own family in 1985.
Les Murray (1938 – 2019) grew up the only son of poor farmers in a remote valley in New South Wales. It was a hard background but one that instilled in him a love of the landscape and people of rural Australia which informed his poetry ever since.
Les Murray was an Australian poet and essayist who in such meditative, lyrical poems as “Noonday Axeman” and “Sydney and the Bush” captured Australia’s psychic and rural landscape as well as its mythic elements.
