Darnand was a right-wing activist who joined various paramilitary and terrorist groups before the war. He formed the Milice Francaise, a pro-German militia, in 1943 and fled to Germany in 1944. He was executed in 1945 after a trial by the High Court.
Joseph Darnand was born in France in 1897. He joined the French Army on the outbreak of the First World War and was awarded seven citations for bravery. After the war Darnand worked as a cabinetmaker before establishing his own transport company in Nice.
