Paul David Hewson (born 10 May 1960), known by the nickname Bono ( / ˈbɒnoʊ / BON-oh ), is an Irish singer-songwriter and activist. [1] He is the lead vocalist and primary lyricist of the rock band U2 .
In September 1976, Hewson met the other members of what would become U2; [10] the band members adopted nicknames, and Hewson soon became known as Bono. [11] At around the same time, he and Ali, as she was known, began dating, and soon became a steady couple.
