Working in an accounting office, Bartleby is withdrawn and calm, but, one day, when his boss (Paul Scofield) asks him to complete a task, he flatly refuses to do it.
Bartleby is adaptation of Herman Melville classic short story "Bartleby, the Scrivener", which tells the tale of a mysterious office clerk who refuses to do any work. Bartleby is a faithful and intelligent rendition of Melville story, capturing the humor, irony, and ambiguity of the original text.
Bartleby (John McEnery) is a likeable yet unusual young man – painfully polite and good-natured – looking for work, purpose, and meaning. He gets a job as an audit clerk in a drab London City office run by a friendly but stuffy accountant (Paul Scofield), although the first interview between the two is typically awkward.
