Perhaps best known to Western audiences for his films “Death by Hanging”, the erotic “In the Realm of the Senses” as well as the war film “Merry Christmas, Mr. Lawrence” which stars David Bowie, Nagisa Oshima's 1969 drama “Boy” is maybe the Japanese director's most approachable and straightforward work.
Just like his most renowned film, In the Realm of the Senses, his film Boy was inspired by a true story. Derived from newspaper clippings, Oshima explored innocence, family dynamics, and class struggle in a story so unconventional yet felt natural.

Ten-year-old Toshio is used as a pawn by his scammer parents to stage car accidents and then extort money from drivers. As the family crisscrosses Japan to elude the law, Toshio escapes into an imaginary world of science fiction fantasy, hoping it will deliver him from his harrowing existence.
