Thomas Michael Bond CBE (13 January 1926 – 27 June 2017) was an English author. He is best known for a series of fictional stories for children, featuring the character of Paddington Bear.
Author of over one hundred books, Michael Bond was born in Newbury, Berkshire, in 1926 and grew up in Reading. On leaving school at the age of fourteen, he spent a year in a lawyers' office before joining the BBC as an engineer.
With his extraordinary flair for developing characters, Michael Bond has written much more besides Paddington including children’s television series The Herbs, books about a guinea pig called Olga da Polga and a series of adult novels about a French detective turned food guide inspector, Monsieur Pamplemousse.
