Le Ventre de Paris (translated into English under many variant titles but literally meaning The Belly of Paris) is Zola's first novel entirely on the working class. The protagonist is Florent, an escaped political prisoner mistakenly arrested after the French coup of 1851.

The novel is set almost exclusively in Les Halles, Paris among the fruit, vegetable, fish and meat markets. For some views of Les Halles today click here. There is one character who lives in Nanterre, and Florent describes his escape from Cayenne.
Le Ventre de Paris is the third novel in the series.4. The plot is centered around the escaped political prisoner Florent Lanquerriere, a man who seems depressed throughout the entire book. His imprisonment, it turns out, was more a matter of being in the wrong place at the wrong time than his being an active revolutionary.
