Nice, France. The deep blue waters of the Cote d’Azur are the dramatic backdrop for elegant Nice, the cultural capital of the French Riviera, set on the Baie des Anges (Bay of Angels). Nice was probably founded around 350 BC by colonists from the Greek city of Phocaea in western Anatolia. It was given the name of Níkaia ( Νίκαια) in honour of a victory over the neighbouring Ligurians (people from the northwest of Italy, probably the Vediantii kingdom); Nike ( Νίκη) was the Greek goddess of victory.
