Jeff Smith, the creator of the series, posing in 2011 at an event in New York Smith originated Bone as a sketch he drew as a child, resembling a telephone handset receiver . This original drawing, a frowning character with its mouth wide open, resembled characteristics of who would become the Bone cousins.
