As with any film, the range is squashed somewhat by push processing but even at extreme pushes of 5-6 stops (EI 12800-25600), HP5+ works surprisingly well for a traditional grain emulsion; and provides excellent separation of highlights and mid-tones.

  7. All ILFORD developers are alkaline. An acidic stop bath stops the development process almost instantly. It protects the fixer from carry-over from the developer and it helps prevent physical development fog. Water can be used as a Stop Bath but it is much slower and less effective than an acidic solution.
