Eastman, ran a business college in Rochester, New York; his mother, Maria Kilbourn, took care of young George and his two older sisters. His father died when he was seven, two years after the family moved to Rochester.

There he attended school and held his first jobs—for an insurance company and in a bank. He had become interested in photography, and by 1880 he had developed a process for making what were called dry plates.
