Alicia Alonso was born on December 21, 1920, in Havana, Cuba. She started dancing as a child when she took flamenco lessons in Spain. Later she studied ballet in Havana and then, at the age of 17, started lessons in New York City at the School of American Ballet. Alonso made her stage debut in 1938, performing in the musical Great Lady.
