Shelley Winters was born Shirley Schrift in 1922 in East St. Louis, Illinois, where her father Johan Schrift was a patternmaker and salesman for a large men's clothing manufacturer. Her mother Rose Winter Schrift , who once sang with the St. Louis Municipal Opera, made certain that Shelley and her sister Blanche Schrift had music lessons, despite the family's meager budget.
