Sep 16, 2024 · When the Civil War began, Batesville was a prosperous mercantile and cultural center for northeastern Arkansas, but when the war was over, the town was destitute, and it took decades for recovery. Even so, Arkansas College and many fine homes were built in the 1870s.
Located along the shores of the White River, Batesville is a small community located in the north central section of the state about 90 miles from Little Rock. Holding title as the second oldest city in the state, the town is packed with history.
Batesville History. Batesville is the oldest existing city in the State of Arkansas. By a treaty of 1808 the Osage Indians ceded this territory to the U.S. and unlike most of the territory of Arkansas, it was never again returned to Indian control.
